Edgy is just that

I’m back from vacation, and after lurking for a day and trying out a few full-blown Edgy installations, I’m coming to much the same conclusion as a lot of other Ubuntu users … that Edgy is definitely edgy.

I’m certainly not bashing any of the work done. Edgy is just as much a functional Ubuntu release as any of the previous I have tried.

I am, however, running into some quirks that either elude me, or don’t warrant fixing.

Just as an example, a default Xubuntu installation on my critical machine — a 1Ghz Inspiron 8000 with 512Mb Crucial PC133, dual 60Gb hard drives, a DVD+-RW, 11B wireless and a GeForce4 Go 440 MX — has weird issues with the nvidia-glx-legacy driver. That driver is what I usually use with Dapper, but under Edgy I get BSODded.

I could fix it, I suppose, but this is my fallback emergency machine, and Dapper runs perfectly on it. It’s not worth it to me to run down a quirk in Edgy on a machine I want to be rock solid anyway. So I backtracked and rebuilt Dapper fresh and clean. Better safe, I figure.
