Call me old fashioned

I started using Winamp around version 1.2 or something. I can actually remember way back in 1998, sending an e-mail to my brother and asking him what an mp3 was, and if I should install Winamp on my new laptop (a 200Mhz CTX EzBook 700 … ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ). He tells the story differently, of course.

So while I appreciate the whole iPod-iTunes-combo-media-library-revolution thing, I don’t like it. It reminds me way too much of the jump to a music control suite that Windows made (When was that? 2000 or so? I forget. WMP9 sticks in my mind as a real thumbsucker, though). Heck, I still use Media Player Classic at work. I never got past v6.4 as far as WMP is concerned.

Now XMMS does the job, but the ~GTK1.2 underpinnings are clumsy and ugly. BMP makes XMMS pretty again, but BMPx is, again, a step in the wrong direction for me. I just want to play some music. I don’t need an entire music management suite.

So I’m happy to think that Audacious is in the Feisty repositories, just in time for spring. Until then, I’m adding the official Audacious repositories to my sources.list file, and installing via aptitude. It makes this old-school Winamp fan happy. ๐Ÿ™‚
