Is hdparm past its time?

Usually hdparm is one of the first things mentioned when a person starts looking for ways to speed up a computer. And yet I haven’t ever gotten an improvement from using hdparm, and I’m starting to wonder if technology has left it behind.

I’ve checked all the options and tried to tune the drive as it seemed best, and invariably there’s no change. I usually start with the ideas suggested in this outdated but nonetheless helpful article, although there are plenty of other sites that suggest many of the same things.

Default settings give the same results for me. I get no measurable difference between the options that are included at a fresh installation and my tweaked-set-and-saved options.

If someone has gotten some sort of incredible speed boost out of hdparm, let me know.

I’ve read it’s no longer needed most of the time as the distros already set that up. I’ll try to find something substantial though.
