Howto: Ubuntu Lite on Feisty

Edit: Unfortunately, the images originally included in this post are gone, because of hosting problems in late 2009. My apologies.

I realized this afternoon that one of the alternative installation methods for Ubuntu Lite was through a repository at blueeyedcreature.net. The site is still accessible and the ubuntu-lite-desktop metapackage is still there, which means you can install a server edition of Feisty, then attach to the repository and install the metapackage.

The final result is remarkably similar to the version I installed a couple of years ago, although the software itself is much more up-to-date.

It took a while to download all 278Mb that was needed atop the server installation. And the actual processing time for setup was hideous on my 300Mhz machine. But it worked, and the system on the whole works. Looking it over right now I see that there’s a lot I would want to add or change, but it’s a functioning, current copy of Ubuntu Lite, built on Feisty.

If you want to do this yourself, add this line to your sources.list file.

deb http://blueeyedcreature.net/ubuntu ./

That’s a dot-slash at the end. Then update and install the metapackage with these two commands.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-lite-desktop

Wait a while, reboot and enjoy. 🙂
