Since the little red laptop went so well, I figured I could survive without the other custom laptop I’ve been hoarding.
This is the Latitude CPx J750GT that I repainted more than a year ago, customized and decked out for as much as I could put into it. It started out as a spare, beat-up machine that a friend was using as a SETI client in his basement. I revamped it and used it as a multimedia station, so it has definitely earned its place.
That’s the machine I could never quite figure out why I was getting weird mouse lag. Perhaps the new owner will be able to track that down.
Still, $140 for an old Pentium II makes me wonder if this one will sell as well. I hope so; that optical drive is an 8X dual layer DVD+-RW — cost me about $140 alone. Even if you bought the whole laptop, popped the drive out and threw the rest away, you’d have a good deal. NEC makes decent optical drives.
And it’s a legitimate dual boot, too. I was going to install GAG on it, but GAG went to 4.8 the other day and I couldn’t find my 4.7 CD. I didn’t want to experiment on a machine I was going to sell.
We’ll see how that goes. It’s a good thing I’m trimming off some of the junk around here. I can actually see the back wall of my closet now. 😯
On any of your rebuilds, have you ever done an OEM installation?
No, and I’m not sure why. I did an OEM install by mistake about a year ago, which was terribly confusing because I was such a newb. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it now. Do you use them for stuff you give away?
I’m trying to learn how to do an OEM install. I’ve gone through it once, but wasn’t sure what I was suppose to do.
I like the idea that I can set up a system, and have it work “like new” for a customer. I’d like to be able to install everything I think should be one a system before I give it out. But, with Gimme on Ubuntu now, that might not be necessary.
