The new drive

As I mentioned earlier, I priced a new hard drive at a couple of large electronics stores here, and came up with one that I think was a good deal.

The winner was a 120Gb 5400rpm Ultra ATA drive, branded as a Logitec LHD-NA120AK (no relation to the Logitech company), but with an internal Hitachi serial number of HTS541612J9AT00. So a Hitachi replaces my Hitachi. I’m pleased with that.

The price was roughly $145 (16,800 yen), which was good enough for me. My old drive, the one that crashed, cost me around $120 three years ago, and it was only half the size — it was 7200rpm, though. Since this is a backup drive, I like the extra space and don’t mind the technically slower speed.

Performance thus far is good. It fit right into the modular bay on my laptop, powered up immediately, repartitioned and reformatted, and is right now holding my meager collection of music, wallpaper and software.
