Mini-linuxes

darrelljon has posted a nice little list of mini-linux distributions — the kind of list you need when you find a 486 in the garbage behind your apartment.

I haven’t tried a lot of those listed, but I definitely plan on it. And the idea of a GUI distro that fits on two floppies is mind-boggling. 😯 Oh, how I wish my Internet was working at home. … 😦

Actually, not that mind boggling. I mean, we all used to use operating systems that would fit on several floppies.

I used to use Amiga 600 back in the day. It actually shipped with a “Live” OS on 2 floppies. Since the 600 didn’t have a HD by default you would boot off the first floppy after the reboot. The 2nd floppy contained advanced utilities, which would be loaded on demand and I used it twice or 3 times.

Also, the whole system was working incredibly fast with only 1MB of RAM and was really a full blown GUI.

Granted, we did come a long way since then, and these days OS is expected to do more things (most notably networking) but still. Sometimes I do wonder why everything is so massive this day.

Anyway, thanks for the links. 🙂

That’s true. I mentally draw a line at the 486 era, conveniently forgetting my old XT that used two floppies and no hard drive.

I wish I had been in on the Amiga revolution. I had an old 500 once, but I had to sell it off only a month or so after I got it. It’s a long story, from a long time ago. … 😐
