“Speechless” doesn’t even begin to express my reaction to this.
That’s my 1Ghz Pentium III, from a cold boot to an IceWM desktop in only 41 seconds on a live CD. Network is up. nv driver selected and running. Video set to 1024×768. Mouse works. Touchpad works. Keyboard is set. Clock is ticking.
How … ? I can’t. … How did they … ?
Debian etch with Firefox and a few other small apps, and straight to the desktop in only 12 seconds longer than it takes my thumbscrewed Arch installation to do the same thing. Runs like greased lightning too.
On my K6-2 it was up and running (without a network card) in only 1:41. That’s only 20 seconds longer than a sparse Ubuntu setup. And only a minute slower than Lowarch, and with a 24X CDROM.

I’ll add that distro to the ones that I want to download, and get to it eventually. I love icewm as a window manager!

Thnx. Ubuntu is really so slow to boot, on live cd forget after selecting boot. 😦
I will give it a try just for the fun of it. Right now using Etch with Xfce4 on my old nx6110. Boot time to login screen is about 40 seconds, but I have a Toshiba with less ram doing it like in 30 second, I haven’t clock it, but if I turn around it is already running.
Impressive indeed, I was almost thrown out of my seat, if it had detected my network cards I would be truly amaze.
Still the boot time was close to 30 seconds, but said it was 10 seconds slow because it say DMA was off in my disk

looks very cool i myself run alot of older PC,s P2s and P3 from 233 mhz to 900 mhz so lite operating systems that do upto date stuff i love rite now im typing this on an old P2 233mhz with a whopping 96mb ram on it lol running xubuntu and the old thing flys 🙂
Mach Boot will make Xubuntu look like a slug. And Fluxbuntu is a far better choice than Xubuntu on a 233Mhz, from my experience. Branch out a little … that 233 will really fly if you let it. 😉
yes i know i had Fluxbuntu on it it was very nice but iv been changing out the OS on it alot testing them out its had DSL and luth and afew others on it also sofar i am liking xubuntu but this weekend il put MACH BOOK on it just to see and thanks for the bloging i love reading your stuff
Right on! Sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed you only tried Xubuntu. 😳 I should have known better; I get so many suggestions of different distros to try, and usually half of them I’ve already installed. 😕 😀

a Slackware 12.0 releases called Absolute 12.1.x. Includes support to Pentium CPUs – you should be able to install on an old Pentium I or a K6-2 machine. You will need at least 48MB of RAM. New X.Org, new KDE libraries (for running K3b), new build of K3b, updated GIMP, updated multimedia installer, recompiled MPlayer, updated Firefox with headers and IDL included to build MPlayer plugin. IceWM recompiled with changes. Updated several utilities.
