I must be having an incredible streak of luck, because I can do almost no wrong with this Lowarch setup I have now. I’ve managed to …
- compile Openbox 3.4.4;
- compile ObConf 2.0.2;
- install ObMenu;
- install the Tango icon theme, and the extras;
- install gtk+ 2.0 Change Theme; and perhaps most incredible,
- I have NetSurf as a browser.
Crazy? I should say so. Granted, there’s nothing there that requires an overwhelming mastery of compilation — I just follow the error messages and try to install what it wants — but still, I’m rather proud. That’s practically the entire system I use on a daily basis, with some small exceptions. I have Web and e-mail access, text file editor, a fantastic file manager, my preferred window manager, a great icon and GTK theme … that’s just about everything.
There was a little acrobatics involved in installing NetSurf; suffice to say I had to install re2c manually, and then tweak the NetSurf PKGBUILD to avoid that as a makedependency (it kept saying it wasn’t installed, but it was), and step over the md5sums (some didn’t match). Otherwise, it fell into place rather easily.
And I’m a very happy camper. I’m still hemmed in with the el-cheapo widescreen effect, and recompiling that Silicon Motion 1.5.1 driver was even worse for a strobe-esque flicker, but when I feel like I need a break from the viewscreen I’ll just switch to vesa. I’m not so vain as to hunt down a random flicker like that. For all I know, the video card in this thing is crapped out.
But there it is: Basically the system I live with every day, tricked out and ready to roll on a 450Mhz K6-2 that runs faster than most Gnome setups I know. Sparse? Yes, and that’s the way I like it. 😈
