Yes, that’s Slitaz again, and I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m thrilled with it for a couple of new reasons — mostly because it can play mp3s now, which I missed before.
I also want to see if I can rig it to use the persistent home feature on an external drive, and maybe configure my bootloader to jump to the ISO rather than my DVD drive. That should be fun. 😈
The other reasons I dig it are mostly software additions here and there — there’s a full software list on the home page. But the general idea is what impresses me too — here’s a full-featured, working graphical distro in less than (about) half the space of DSL. And I can get online, run a sharp and clean desktop at 1600x1200x16, and listen to music while I surf.
If you have a hard-drive-less machine or need something to commandeer a public computer, this is probably a great option. The ISO will fit on a mini-CD, and there’s support for multiple keysets and several languages.
This has definitely supplanted DSL for me — it’s smaller, faster and better looking, and the forums appear to be quite friendly. I’m burning this one permanently, which means it gets to join Arch and Ubuntu on real CDs and not just my old CDRW. 😉

If you rank them (DSL, Crux, and Arch — all by default installation, not self compile) which is the coolest? How you sequence? 🙂

On that machine I would definitely try Slitaz first. If that’s too easy, or if you want something a little more permanent, try Arch. When you’re comfortable with that and want a little more speed and a lot more challenge, try Crux. They’ll probably go progressively faster, but they’re also progressively more difficult, and that can be frustrating.
DSL … well, DSL has some uses, but I don’t keep it around any more. I used it a lot when I tore apart recycled machines, but these days it’s not appealing to me, particularly when it has Slitaz to compete with.
Not particularly interested in this as I like building my own with arch and have no real need for a live cd, although 24mb is extremely impressive. However through this distro I’ve discovered jwm which looks really cool; openbox meets icewm? I shall be trying it when I get my PIII back to arch (if I get bored with gentoo).

I take advantage to say that SliTaz provide security update and have some PCMCIA support such as xircom_cb (for you this one K.Mandla). Note also that the English documentation part is currently improved.

this is a amazing find, took a long while for the 22mb to download though, i didnt believe it was 22mb at first for the long download, but very nice distro, i’d say it kick’s DSL’s butt in size and speed and look
A new Cooking LiveCD ISO image, providing many improvements from the stable release, is now available.
SliTaz now uses the minimalistic, highly configurable Openbox as its default window manager.
Auto-mounting of removable media, such as USB flash drives, is available.
Most of the major packages have been updated. And software packages can now be easily managed through the graphical SliTaz Packages Manager. Because there are nearly 600 packages on the repositories, there is tremendous scope for expansion.
The cooking LiveCD now offers: Lua, the programming language; Searchmonkey, a fast, real-time desktop search engine; Hardinfo, the system profiler and benchmarker; LXTask, the lightweight task manager; password and clipboard managers; and super-fast Firefox 3.0 RC1.
This version will be showcased at the LinuxDays 2008 Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, 21-22 May 2008.
