pytmenu is unconventional, but I can’t deny that it works, and has potential.
That’s with Arch64, by the way, although it will probably (certainly?) work in other distros too.
Basically this is a common applications list, thrown up on the screen as a transparency, with applications triggered when you hit return. Ideally it needs xcompmgr running to enjoy the effect; without it, you get a flat grey screen with text over top. Openbox users should be able to cue this with keyboard bindings quite easily.
Right now you have to manually edit the script to change the program list and it’s not hooked to the Debian menu or the common apps directory. I don’t see a way to tint the transparency effect either. But I’m sure when uzusan gets some more feedback, some more commonplace features will appear.
It’s like a video game menu. Usability would go up a bit if you could see more apps at a time.
Quick question; does transparency work for you out of the box?
I’ve got xcompmgr and transset, but no luck with the transparency (though it works if I run transset and click the window). I threw together a hack with transset-df and sleep that fixes it, but its ugliness haunts me.
Mine worked straightaway, after I started up xcompmgr, of course. I was using Arch64 at the time; were you also using Arch?
Yes, I’m using Arch (just vanilla, not Arch64). Hmm… looks like a fun friday of Googling then. 🙂
Sorry. 😦 If it’s any help, I built both xcompmgr and transset-df with yaourt -Sb, and started xcompmgr alone (with no flags) for that picture. I’m using a Radeon XPress 200M with the catalyst driver package. I can’t think of anything else that might be relevant. Good luck. 😐
Thank man. 😀 I’m getting closer. The issue seems to be with Evilwm as the whole shebang works fine with Openbox. It’s a bit weird, I think that the Cairo alpha transparency actually works, but that it’s showing some root-esque monocromatic window beneath it all. They call it Evilwm for a reason. 😉
